Dear Theta Sister:
Your immediate participation is needed in a grassroots letter-writing campaign in support of federal legislation that will be of great benefit to Kappa Alpha Theta and the Greek community at large.
Our Fraternity, in conjunction with the other inter/national fraternities and sororities, is asking our members to contact Congress and ask for their support of the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act of 2007 (H.R. 643/S. 638). The Act would erase a long-standing disparity in the law and allow educational foundations, like the Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation, to accept and to use tax-deductible charitable contributions to make grants to local facility corporation boards. Members would send their gifts made payable to the Foundation and earmarked for a specific chapter. These grants could then be used for the purpose of improving an existing house or building a new house. Passage of the Act would be a big boost for our chapter housing as it would make it much easier to raise funds for needed safety enhancements and other infrastructure improvements.
The more sponsors we have for this legislation, the more likely the Act will be passed. Your letters are key to our efforts because your senators and representatives are more likely to sign onto legislation when they know their constituents are contacting them for support. So, the sooner you send those letters to your elected officials, the better the chance that this Act will pass.
Here is all you have to do to assist us in this effort:
1. Log on to www.fraternalcaucus.org, locate the “Get Involved” tab at the top of the page, and click on “Register with the CFC.” It will take just a couple of minutes for you to provide the campaign with some basic information Theta leaders can use later in our efforts to reach every member of Congress. Please do provide your Greek affiliation so we know how many Thetas have registered.
2. After registering on the site, please go to the tab marked “Legislation” and click on “Write Your Legislators.”
3. Simply complete all the boxes and fill in the first paragraph using their example or your own words; the rest of the letter is written for you. From there your letters are automatically sent as an email communication. Please be sure to check the box that asks for a copy of your letter to be sent to the Fraternal Caucus so they know Thetas are writing letters for this important Greek initiative. We want to be sure that we are well-represented in this campaign. They do keep us updated on the number of Thetas who have written, and to date it is well under 200.
4. Feel free to send letters to other members of Congress you might know and also ask your family and friends who are members of a fraternity or sorority to please do the same.
We thank you in advance for your participation in this important letter-writing campaign. If you have already written, thank you and please be sure to send letters to newly elected legislators. The more who write, the more likely we are to see this bill become law and that is truly a win for Kappa Alpha Theta and our Greek brothers and sisters.
Loyally,
